The day includes understanding requesting, interpretation and competency of lumbar spine imaging. Case study based- teaching, orientation, normal, normal variants, pathological images, evidence base of imaging and how to utilise it to enhance your existing clinical reasoning & patient care.

All course places must be booked through the website and paid for by card. There is no facility for later payment. It is up to the individual delegate to reclaim course fees from their employer. Facilitator: Chris Mercer MSc FMCSP FMMACP Consultant Physiotherapist, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS trust.

Chris has an interest in serious spinal pathology and advanced physiotherapy practice. He is currently clinical lead for the MSK service and Spinal Clinic and also working in the NHS England Behaviour Change unit as a Clinical lead. He is current co-chair of the National Physiotherapy Consultant Group

 The day includes: Understanding requesting, interpretation and competency. Requesting and looking at Xrays, MRIs and where appropriate USS/CT. Case study based- teaching, orientation, normal, normal variants, pathological images, evidence base of imaging and how to utilise it to enhance your existing clinical reasoning & patient care

Learning Objectives
By the end of the course(s) you will: -

  • Know the indication for requesting basic imaging for the lumbar spine
  • Have a structured method of looking at these images
  • Understand where imaging plays a role clinically and pit falls and advantages in the use of imaging and patient care
  • Have an understanding of what is normal and what is abnormal in these images - Have an idea of resources to help you develop your skills 
  • Discuss how you interpret imaging, imaging reports and how you discuss this with your MSK patient

You will not:

  • Be legally qualified to request radiology 
  • Be legally covered to interpret radiological examinations or write imaging reports
  • Know everything about imaging these anatomical areas

Facilitator

Christopher Mercer

Chris is a Consultant Physiotherapist for Western Sussex Foundation NHS Trust since January 2003. He is the clinical lead for musculoskeletal physiotherapy and the spinal triage clinic. He is also research and audit lead for therapies.

Chris is a Fellow of the MACP and the CSP, and past Chair of the MACP.  He currently chairs the CSP Education Awards panel and is vice-chair of the CSP Charitable trust.  He has a particular interest in advanced practice roles and competencies, and clinically an interest in serious pathology of the spine.  He continues to work, teach and research in these areas.
