Elsevier Research Award

This is an award of up to £5,000 (sponsored by Elsevier in partnership with the MACP) to encourage physiotherapists’ wider participation in research within the field of neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Criteria for Applications

Applicants must be full members of the MACP.

The MACP (in partnership with Elsevier) will consider applications that demonstrate the following research characteristics:

  • Demonstrates benefits for patient care

  • Enhances the body of clinical physiotherapy knowledge

  • Likely to contribute to the development of neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy

  • Costings appear reasonable and controllable

  • Addresses current research priorities.

The application should be supported by an individual with the required research skills or co-authored by an accomplished researcher. Alternatively, the proposal should include details of an accredited researcher in the chosen field who would be prepared to act as a mentor.

Judgement of Applications

  • Final judgement about the efficacy of the proposed research will be made by the MACP research committee and no further correspondence will be entered into
  • Judgement will be sent in writing to the applicant within 6 weeks of the deadline.
  • The awards will be announced at the MACP AGM, where the successful applicant (or nominated representative) will be presented with the award.

Conditions of the Award

  • It is a condition of the award that all publications and presentations related to the Research acknowledge the support of the MACP and Elsevier.

  • Successful applicants will be expected (within 1 year of completion of the project) to present their work at a conference or MACP meeting.

  • It is an expectation that the recipient of the award will submit work for publication to an Elsevier Research Award appropriate journal within a reasonable time frame

  • Successful applicants will be required to provide the MACP with a written report within 6 months of completing the project.

  • If the above conditions are not met, the applicant will be expected to reimburse the MACP for the full amount of the award.

Application Procedure

Applicants should include the following information in their application:

  • Brief CV (not > 2 sides of A4) of proposer and supervisor/mentor, including details of research experience.

  • Outline of the research project (1000-1500 words): title, background, plan of Investigation, proposed analysis, ethical considerations, references, and timetable.

  • Where ethical approval is required, the relevant paperwork should be submitted with the application.

  • A section must be included on how the research fulfils the criteria.

  • A detailed breakdown of costings should be included. Please indicate how the finances will be managed (for example, university or hospital finance department).

  • Any other funding applied for/received should be stated.

Referees

References are required from two people and should be submitted with the application. One should have a detailed knowledge of the applicant and the intended field of research proposed, and the other should be qualified to make an authoritative judgement as to the feasibility of the proposed research project.
