Overview of the course philosophy
Glasgow Caledonian University and the Manipulation Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP) have collaborated to deliver a Master of Science Programme in Manual Therapy. The course content is aimed at developing advanced clinical reasoning and treatment skills taking into account all systems of the body in conjunction with thorough knowledge and understanding of pain mechanism and is constantly monitored and developed in accordance with the ever-changing evidence base which underpins expert clinical practice.
Manual Therapy Modules 1 & 2 (60 M level credit)
These modules take place, part time, over 13 weekends spanning 13 months. As there is a strong focus on independent study and preparation for each weekend, participants should consider work and family commitments carefully prior to commencing study. The expectation for self study would be approximately 10 hours per week. Much of the learning takes place through student led tutorials, seminars, clinical reasoning panels and practical workshops, with few keynote lectures taking place early in the modules.
Methods of Assessment
Students receive feedback frequently through clinical reasoning panels, class presentations and a practical assessment. The formal module assessment includes coursework essay, techniques assessment, evaluation of reflective portfolio, patient presentation and practical/viva examination.
Clinical practice component (30 M Level credit)
This module is designed to be undertaken following Manual Therapy 1 & 2 modules. During 200 clinical hours the student will have the opportunity to develop a high level of expertise and clinical reasoning in the management of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions with nominated clinical educators. These modules will be arranged individually with the clinical Placement Co-ordinator to suit student's needs and are subject to availability.
Research Methods component (30 M Level credit)
Students require to have successfully completed a module in Research Methods to be eligible for MACP membership.
Exemptions to MACP membership
Students are eligible for Associate Membership at the commencement of the course.
